Diversification in covering consumption and export volumes
The previously strongest import route for natural gas from Russia via Ukraine and Slovakia ceased to exist at the end of the year. Since then, consumption and exports to Italy, Hungary and Slovenia have mainly been covered by storage withdrawals. There is a fairly constant flow of around 120 GWh per day from Germany, around half of what was still coming from Russia to Austria via Baumgarten in December. For some weeks now, significant quantities have also been imported from Italy via Arnoldstein.
The diversification of the supply routes can be clearly seen in the graph, but the coverage of demand and the export volumes are very dependent on storage withdrawals. (Note: The area above the black line shows the export volumes and, to a lesser extent, the injection volumes towards the end of March).
The current storage level is 43.8%, which corresponds to around 44.5 TWh. Of this, 20 TWh is the strategic gas reserve. Therefore, significantly lower storage levels are expected for winter 25/26.
