Growing Price Spread Between Austria and Germany

In recent months, gas prices in the German and Austrian markets have been at very similar levels. In February, the gas price briefly surged to around €60/MWh, likely due to both the weather and the increased use of gas-fired power plants.

Since the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East, prices have been rising sharply again. At the moment, it’s difficult to predict how prices will continue to develop. The news of a possible blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, through which around one fifth of the world’s (!) LNG volumes and 21% of global oil consumption are transported gives little cause for optimism, even though the threat currently appears to have subsided following the announcement of a ceasefire. However, the situation remains tense.

In this regard, we can only appeal (not just for energy price reasons): Give peace a chance!

Since early April, when gas storage injections resumed, price developments in Austria and our neighboring country Germany have diverged significantly, with a difference of around €3.5 to €4/MWh now evident. This underlines the urgent need for stronger integration of Austria into the more liquid German market. The "WAG Loop" project by Gas Connect Austria GmbH (GCA) is an important first step in that direction.
