The alternative to natural gas – first biomethane feed-in in Burgenland

Biomethane can be an important climate-friendly alternative in the future supply of gas, as renewable raw materials, manure and municipal and industrial organic waste are used for its production.

Biomethan Parndorf GmbH, the operator of the plant, has set itself the goal of feeding over 20 GWh per year into the gas grid with a maximum hourly output of up to 5,000 kWh/h – in mid-September 2025, biomethane was fed directly into the Burgenland gas grid for the first time.

Until now, the biogas produced in the plant's fermentation process has been used to generate electricity. With the installation of a processing plant, the biogas can now be upgraded to natural gas quality and fed into the grid as high-quality biomethane.

In addition to setting up facilities for the transfer, measurement, odorisation and recompression of biomethane, Netz Burgenland also introduced a system for determining the calorific value in order to be able to accurately determine customer consumption. Together with AGGM as the system service provider, this system was successfully certified in the course of an OVGW audit.

However, in order to be able to make appropriate use of the existing biomethane potential in Austria and Burgenland, clear targets must be formulated and a legal framework established. Optimal feed-in points for biomethane can be found with inGRID, AGGM's interactive feed-in map for renewable gases.
