E-Control report on outage and disruption statistics for Austria 2025

On 12 August 2025, E-Control published the latest gas outage and disruption statistics. The report assesses the year 2024 and provides detailed key figures on the reliability of the Austrian gas supply. It offers a comprehensive overview of supply security and shows how stable the domestic gas network is, even in a challenging environment.

The current report also shows that the gas supply in Austria remains at a high level overall, even though the key figures for 2024 show a significant increase. A total of 3,157 interruptions were reported, around two-thirds of which were unplanned. Particularly striking is the increase in the average outage duration per metering point (SAIDI) to just under four minutes, compared to only around one and a half minutes in the previous year. The number of connections affected (SAIFI) and the duration per customer affected (CAIDI) also rose significantly. It is striking that this deterioration is almost exclusively attributable to a few network operators who recorded unusually long interruptions.

The causes were largely to be found in the distribution network itself – for example, technical defects, construction work or external influences. The difference between the summer and winter months is also striking: while construction work led to more interruptions in the summer, the higher dependence on gas in the winter meant that disruptions had to be remedied more quickly. For the customers affected, however, interruptions lasted longer in the winter, which is due to the calculation logic of the key figures.

Conclusion
Despite these developments, the gas supply in Austria remains very reliable. Interruptions are still rare and at a low level compared to other European countries, not least because the approximately 46,000-kilometre-long gas network is largely laid underground and is therefore significantly less susceptible to external influences and environmental impacts than power lines, for example.
