A not entirely genuine interview with the traditional Christkind
Interview with the traditional Christkind – exclusively for AGGM AG
Normally, AGGM talks to network operators, biomethane producers, ministries, regulators and other experts in this section. During the Christmas season, we are allowing ourselves a slight change of perspective and a conversation of a somewhat different kind.
The following interview is not a formal meeting, a background discussion or a strictly confidential session, but a fictional, AI-generated conversation with the Christ Child, whom we will refer to here as the Chr-AI-stkind.
Without a crystal ball, but with a twinkle in its eye, it looks ahead to the energy year 2025, to hydrogen, infrastructure and the upcoming legal changes. Of course, none of the statements are divinely authorised – but their content is thoroughly grounded in reality.
We hope you enjoy reading and that, amid legislative amendments and market models, you also find a little Christmas cheer.
AGGM: Dear Chr-AI-stkind! As we all know, you have the best view from above. How does the European and Austrian energy world look from your perspective? Will it be peaceful?
Chr-AI-stkind: Let's put it this way: it's less like a silent night and more like an orchestra rehearsal just before a concert. Lots of movement, some off-key notes, but also real progress. Europe is visibly struggling to achieve competitiveness and climate targets at the same time, and Austria is right in the middle of the orchestra. The direction is right, but there is still room for improvement in terms of speed and coordination – I can see that quite clearly even through the cloud cover and fog.
AGGM: Hydrogen is at the top of many wish lists. Is the SoutH2 Corridor more of a Christmas miracle for you, or is it already becoming a reality?
Chr-AI-stkind: It is clearly part of the emerging reality – but one that still requires a lot of careful work. The reinstatement of the SoutH2 Corridor in the PCI list is not a Christmas miracle, but a clear signal of its feasibility and strategic importance. Now it's a matter of translating planning into infrastructure: building networks, thinking about storage and creating reliable framework conditions. Hydrogen is not created by wishful thinking – not even by the Christ Child – but by consistent implementation.
AGGM: Speaking of storage, the study commissioned by the BMWET, ‘Hydrogen Storage in Austria,’ shows great potential, but also great uncertainties. What is most urgently needed now?
Chr-AI-stkind: The courage to implement and clarity in the rules of the game. Austria has excellent geological conditions, but potential alone does not heat a power plant, just as hot air from discussion circles is unfortunately not usable for heat pumps. What is missing is a reliable legal framework and planning security for investors. And yes, a little practical experience would also help – even angels learn by doing.
AGGM: In 2026, we expect the amendment to the Gas Industry Act with a hydrogen market model and a Renewable Gas Act. What would you advise legislators for the new year?
Chr-AI-stkind: Firstly, openness to technology with clear goals. Secondly, a market model that enables investment rather than postponing it. Thirdly: less bureaucracy, more systems thinking. Hydrogen and renewable gases are not an add-on, but part of the future energy system. Those who recognise this will save themselves a lot of repairs later on.
AGGM: Finally, what is your wish for the coming year?
Chr-AI-stkind: That 2026 will be the year when we move from talking to doing. The energy transition does not need a wish list, but a well-tuned toolbox. If politics, business and infrastructure operators continue to work together as they have done recently, then the ‘energy transition in the pipeline’ will become more than just a nice slogan. To this end, I might even put a little heavenly support and common sense under the Christmas tree this year.
We would like to thank Chr-AI-stkind for the exclusive interview!
Merry Christmas and a confident start to the new energy year!
